Recognizing Our Emergency Services Families

One of the nominations this month came from an EMS member looking to recognize a fellow healthcare professional. Her nomination and story touched our hearts deeply and with permission we share it here. With our partners from Quilts for Everyday Heroes we were able to put that smile on her face and let her know how incredibly strong and special she is.

Marie, a NICU nurse and good friend, recently almost lost her life and leg to necrotizing fasciitis. We were skiing with her in Canmore and when she came home, she was so sick and even commented on how she thought she was dying. The Dr’s weren’t too optimistic either at first. She was originally sent home with a diagnosis of cellulitis and then returned that night with toxic shock syndrome. Her kidneys, liver and heart were starting to fail, and the family was being called in to come say goodbye. She somehow stabilized enough for them to rush her to surgery, where she was told if I must take your leg to save your life, I will. She was in the ICU for 10 days and has had 7 surgeries. The pain is excruciating, and she is living with the constant check every day of if it has returned. The surgeon is now optimistic she is going to make it. It is going to be a painful and long, long road to recovery. Her body will never be the same. I would like to put a smile on her face as she is the kindest person and gives so much in her nursing practice.

With our partners from Quilts for Everyday Heroes we were able to put that smile on her face and let her know how incredibly strong and special she is.

Life can be hard.

It is full of challenges and unpredictable difficulty at times. As a First Responder,
adding these times to a life that has already seen and experienced so much
heartache can really shake the foundation of a person- let’s be honest not many
people call the ambulance or fire truck for happy situations. It can also,
however, force you to realize your resilience and strength. This month we have
seen examples of this in so many ways, by so many of our First Responders. We
were absolutely honoured to recognize these two amazing individuals for their
tenacity, strength, and fortitude. Whether life is full of triumphs or trials we
want our members to know…we see you and we are here for you!

Life can also be so sweet…

Welcome to this world little Brooklyn!

A very heartfelt congratulations on your new bundle of joy Ryan and Alex!
